## Common uses

gitmek means “to go” and is the general verb for movement toward a place. The forms shown here include git- in gittim and gitmişim, and gid- in the present-continuous form gidiyorum.

- nereye gidiyorsun? (where are you going?)
- eve gitmek (to go home)

- gidelim! (let's go!)

## Present Continuous (Şimdiki zaman)

Why does gitmek become gidiyorum?: In the present continuous, final t in git- becomes d before -iyor: git- + -iyor → gidiyor (gidiyorum with the first-person ending).

## Other finite forms

These forms still behave like verb forms in clauses: commands, condition, necessity, wish, ability, and inability.

| Form type | Form | Example sentence | Meaning | Use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Informal | git | Git. | Say git when speaking directly to one person. | Direct command form. |
| Polite / plural | gidin | Gidin. | Say gidin when being polite or speaking to more than one person. | Direct command form. |
| Negative | gitme | Gitme. | gitme means "do not go." | Direct command form. |
| Conditional | gidersem | Gidersem, haber veririm. | If I go, I will let you know. | Finite if-form; changes by person. |
| Necessitative | gitmeliyim | Gitmeliyim. | I should go. | Obligation or strong advice. |
| Optative | gideyim | Gideyim. | Let me go. | Wish, suggestion, or let-me form. |
| Ability | gidebilirim | Gidebilirim. | I can go. | Can do the action. |
| Inability | gidemem | Gidemem. | I cannot go. | Cannot do the action. |

## Derived verb forms

Derived forms extend the base action, for example through negation, ability, or inability.

| Form type | Form | Example sentence | Meaning | Use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Negative infinitive | gitmemek | Bugün gitmemek daha iyi. | It is better not to go today. | Negates the action as an infinitive. |
| Ability infinitive | gidebilmek | Gidebilmek istiyorum. | I want to be able to go. | Ability form as a dictionary/infinitive form. |
| Inability infinitive | gidememek | Gidememek zor. | Being unable to go is hard. | Inability form as an infinitive. |

## Non-finite forms

These forms act more like nouns, adjectives, or modifiers than full tense forms.

| Form type | Form | Example sentence | Meaning | Use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Infinitive | gitmek | Gitmek istiyorum. | I want to go. | Dictionary form of the verb. |
| Verbal noun | gitme | Gitme kolay değil. | going is not easy. | Noun-like action form. |
| Future participle | gidecek | Gidecek zamanım var. | I have time to go. | Adjective/noun-like future form. |
| Past participle | gitmiş | Gitmiş gibi görünüyor. | It looks as if someone has gone. | Adjective-like completed form. |

## Questions about these forms

### Why is it gidiyorum but gitmiyorum?

In the positive progressive, git- is shown as gid- before -Iyor: gidiyorum. In the negative, -mA comes between the stem and -Iyor; its vowel drops before the progressive marker, giving gitmiyorum. The m of the negative suffix follows t, so the positive t → d change does not occur there. Compare Şimdi okula gidiyorum. — “I’m going to school now.” and Bugün okula gitmiyorum. — “I’m not going to school today.”
